Number 80 Wing Countermeasures
Royal Air Force
The Royal Air Force’s No. 80 Wing were an electronic countermeasures unit, one of those functions was to transmit a false signal on the same frequency as the German ‘Knickenbein’ and guide the enemy away from their intended target. In air raids over the UK and in particularly on the night of the 8th and 9th May 1941 over Nottingham, as the Luftwaffe aircrews had no way of distinguishing between a genuine signal from their ground stations and a signal from No. 80 Wing, they could be tricked into dropping their bombs away from their intended targets.
