LIGHTS AND FIREWORKS

RESTRICTIONS PARTIALLY REMOVED

__________

OFFICIAL STATEMENT AS TO BLINDS

It is officially announced today that the masking of street lamps may be removed, but in view of the coal shortage the total number of lamps in use should not exceed half-normal.

The shading of lights in house and shops may be withdrawn, but the prohibition of light in shop windows and of advertisement lights must be maintained on account of coal shortage.

Tonight only, however, the lighting of shop windows will be allowed.

The military authorities will give permission for the display of fireworks and bonfires, subject to the approval of arrangements with the police, and the selling for authorised display is permitted, but the general use of fireworks by the public is not permitted at present.

Permission for fireworks displays etc., is limited by the military authorities to one week, and if this period is extended, further announcement will be made.

The restrictions of the ringing of bells and striking of public clocks at night are withdrawn.

The above relaxations apply generally in Great Britain except that the Admiralty have asked that the restrictions on lights visible from the sea should be retained for the present.

The question of lights on vehicles is under consideration, and for the present the existing orders remain in force.

HOTELS, CLUBS AND THEATRES

GENERAL SUSPENSION OF THE LIGHTING ORDER

The President of the Board of Trade announces that the operation  of the Lighting, Heating and Power Order (1918) relating to hotels, restaurants, clubs and places of amusement will be suspended during the present week.

The effect of this will be that the prohibition under the Order of the serving of meals at hotels, etc., after 9.30pm and the closing of places of entertainment at 10.30 are temporarily suspended.
